Part IX-Freshly Ground

This is a pretty interesting band right here. To put it plain and simple: this is some mellow stuff right here. Acoustic and clean guitars, slow drumming, smooth bass lines with some keyboards and a variety of other instruments thrown into the mix. It's very raw in that there's not a lot of editing, and it has this feel that they're kind of in the room with you. It's simple, which is why its so fun. Typically, I'm not into mellow kind of pop music, but I think these guys are chill enough to really get to the mellow side of me. The female vox make it all the more enjoyable. Her voice is really heavenly--perhaps some of America's contemporaries could learn a thing or two from her, especially concerning voice editing in the studio.

This song really reflects the attitude of which I speak. It's very mellow and happy, but not really in a trippy sense. You get the instrumental diversity, those calm vocals, and a solid rhythm section. It starts off with a catchy guitar part, then heads right into the song. It's composed in a very simple manner, so there's not much to say about it really; it's typical Sonata-form. Still, it'a definitely worth a listen, along with their other material. South Africa's outdone themselves as far as this goes. I can only hope that their sudden pop culture relevance won't become tainted by anything from the U.S. Wouldn't want to spoil a good thing. 8/10

  2. I love the fact that you're reviewing music from different cultures. If i may suggest, you might want to look into some celtic rock and classical celtic music. They use traditional intruments dating back the the Renn. and it happens to be one of my favorite genres.

  4. Some of the classical celtic i would recommend is Riverdance Celtic Heartbeat or The Night Heron Consort- The Shores of Lillisand. There's also an album called Celtic Mystique that's good but i don't know quite who does it. Some of the songs are just instrumentals and some of them have lyrics in Gaelic. Hope you enjoy.
